Samsung EX2F: successor to the legendary compact camera

Samsung EX2F: successor to the legendary compact camera

Two years ago, Samsung decisively managed to invade the sector of high-quality small cameras by releasing the EX1 model, which was previously equipped with a huge matrix by the standards of small cameras and at the same time a fast zoom lens. Now the EX1 has been replaced by the EX2F camera, whose differences from its predecessor can now be described by the famous slogan “faster, higher, stronger.”

Visually, the EX2F is practically no different from the EX1, but inside the camera uses completely new components. Instead of a 10 MP CCD matrix, a 12 MP CMOS matrix with back-illumination is now used. The lens has also undergone some changes: the focal length range is 24-80 mm, but the aperture itself now varies from f/1.4 to f/2.7. In addition to all this, the EX2F is equipped with an integrated ND filter for shooting in fairly bright conditions.

The camera must declare that it can take photos in different formats, as well as record video.

Separately, now I would like to note the integrated Wi-Fi module, which allows you to send photos and videos directly from the camera itself to various social networks, as well as use smartphones based on Android and iOS to control the camera.

Samsung EX2F - the big league

The new product is equipped with a 1/1.7-inch CMOS sensor, while the zoom lens is one of the fastest in its class - F/1.4-2.7. Only the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX7 has the best performance - F/1.4-2.3, however, even the approximate cost of this camera in the CIS is still unknown, so it is difficult to draw any parallels. Samsung EX2F also boasts a built-in Wi-Fi adapter, the functionality of which is much broader than just sending footage to a PC. Well, that's not all - the camera is equipped with a rotating AMOLED display with a resolution of 614 thousand dots. However, it would be surprising if the world leader in the production of AMOLED matrices did not integrate them into its top-end compact, because this distinguishes the camera under test from its competitors. At the same time, the price of the camera remains quite affordable - in the USA it sells for just under $500.

⇡#Supply set

The standard package includes a USB charger, data cable, battery, lens cap with mounting cord, camera shoulder strap, user manual, and a disk with an electronic version of the manual and additional software.

Optionally available are an HDMI and AV cable, an optical viewfinder, an external flash, an external microphone, a wired remote control, a charger with the ability to charge the battery outside the camera body, and a case.

⇡#Appearance

The EX2F is housed in a compact and fairly thin metal body. Its panels are not at all afraid of minor abrasions, and the screen, thanks to its rotating design, can be turned over during transportation, which protects the rather soft plastic that protects the LCD matrix from minor scratches and abrasions. Fingerprints on the body panels are clearly visible, but they are quite easy to wipe; even a rough cloth will do the job. The protrusion on the front side is covered with rubber, and quite hard. This rubber slips a little in the hand, but there are also advantages - it practically does not attract dust and small lint. The build quality is high, we couldn’t find any flaws. When trying to twist the case did not give in at all and did not make a single sound.

Like many competing compacts, the lens is protected not by a shutter, but by a cover that is attached to the camera with a cord. This approach is much more practical than that of the Fujifilm x10 camera, where the cap does not have a fastening cord, and fixation occurs due to friction (the inner surface of the cap is covered with velvety fabric). The camera fits extremely comfortably in a medium-sized hand, and all controls fall neatly under your fingers. The differences from its predecessor, the EX1 camera, are barely perceptible - they mainly come down to the castling of controls, which, from a subjective point of view, has actually become more convenient, although there was no reason to complain about it in the EX1.

At the front there is a lens with a decorative ring that hides the thread for installing additional accessories (teleconverter), a front control dial and an autofocus illuminator lamp, which also serves as an indicator for the automatic shutter release timer. The absence of a system speaker and an IR receiver is immediately noticeable. The speaker, it turns out, simply moved to the side surface, and there is no IR receiver in the new product at all. However, the camera also has more interesting ways of remote control, but more on that later.

Most of the rear surface is occupied by a large 3-inch rotating display with two degrees of freedom, limited angles of 180 and 270 degrees. To the right of the display there is a video key, as well as AEL buttons, entering the main menu, calling up the quick function menu, a 4-way multifunction key with an enter button in the center and a control dial around the perimeter, as well as keys for entering view and delete mode. In fact, compared to its predecessor, there is only one significant change - the key for selecting the metering mode has been replaced by a button for calling up the quick function menu. The video key and AEL button have also been reshuffled, and the “right” key is now responsible not for calling up the menu for changing the sensitivity level, but for activating the MobileLink function (transferring pictures to a smartphone via a Wi-Fi connection).

There are few changes at the top - in fact, only the power key is now separated from the drive mode selection dial. So, on top there is a hot shoe, a pop-up flash with a lock button, a power button, a pair of microphones, a drive mode dial, an operating mode dial and a shutter key with a zoom control lever.

At the bottom there is only a connector for mounting on a tripod, as well as a cover hiding the compartments for installing a memory card and battery.

The left side surface would be completely empty if not for the system speaker. On the right, under the plastic door, there are ports for connecting HDMI and USB/AV cables. By the way, the battery is also charged through the last connector.

Tsikavo, how would this novelty look like it would have been written by Zhenya? 😉

But I didn’t think to write for the simple reason that I didn’t know what was cool about it =P

For example, I was really looking forward to this news (and the camera).

Damn, the toad was a little strangled. I just bought an EX1 a week ago. But to hell with her. I didn’t pay $550 in the USA, but only 2100 UAH.))) And the camera is of course cool. With the new aperture ratio of 1.4 and back-illumination of the matrix, there was no need to install a flash at all.

Is the screen touch or not? If only there was a GPS there. Good.. Looking forward to the tests :)

As an owner of EX1 since the fall of 2010, the appearance of EX2 is doubly interesting. Of course, the information is still incomplete. For the sake of Full HD, the higher-quality CCD matrix (it is slow and does not support Full HD) has been replaced with CMOS. So Andrey, who rushed to buy EX1: depends on what you need the camera for. Scam camera manufacturers hide the most important parameters: - dynamic range. -light sensitivity in lux. And they hang noodles in ISO, superzooms, megapixels. For those who don’t know, film is much better than digital in terms of dynamic range. For digital ones, this parameter depends on the matrix. The built-in ND filter in the EX2 is good; it partially solves the problem of the low dynamic range of the matrices. -ISO is achieved by simply increasing the gain. But this is unlikely to change light sensitivity. It is determined by the lens aperture (and in EX2, 1.65 times more light passes through than in EX1) and the parameters of the matrix.

To understand ISO: if you replace the amplifier in an over-the-air antenna with a stronger one, this does not mean that you will get better reception. The signal to noise ratio will remain virtually unchanged. Both signal and noise will increase. But it helps when “catching fleas.” For better reception, you need more gain in the antenna itself (for photo aperture of the lens) or find a place where the signal is better (for photos - illumination)

I would like to know the light sensitivity of both matrices.

The functionality hasn't changed much since the advent of Wi-Fi. GPS is a new functional quality. Pavel, do you have statistics on the needs of users of both?

The weight and dimensions with such a matrix and the absence of a viewfinder are large. The competitors have already surpassed them in these parameters. Especially with a 1″ matrix.

I found the weight and dimensions specifications. The dimensions are a little smaller, but the weight without the battery is 294 g. That is, the total weight of the EX2 is noticeably less than that of the EX1 (386 g). With such aperture ratio and weight and size parameters, it is appropriate to compare it with a masterpiece from Sony: the RX100. The lens here is much better in terms of digital parameters. From 24, the aperture is from 1.4 and drops a little at the long end, unlike the RX100. But it is impossible to compare sharpness and other parameters using meager numbers. Sony's combination of a 1″ matrix with a lens with an aperture of 1.8 provides a 1.7 times increase in light sensitivity compared to the EX2F, which has a 1/1.7″ matrix and a lens aperture of 1.4. Of course, with equal matrix parameters. Here they are the same: CMOS. But they may differ in parameters. Sony doesn't have an ND filter. The display in Sony simply, as they say now, sucks: not OLED and not rotating. But most importantly, there are more camera models with high parameters and medium dimensions. In which the camera can be put either in a purse or even in a pocket. When visiting photography departments, I am amazed at the modern technical imbecility: on the shelves there is either pure soap or monsters. But there must be something in between. He is almost invisible.
