Little big guy. Tamron 70-210mm F4 Di VC USD

Tamron 70-210 F/4 Di VC USD - the best thing for an amateur

Tamron has a lot of good lenses in its arsenal, but in recent years, with the release of new lens designs and all sorts of crises in addition, a certain vacuum has formed between the most affordable lens models and the lenses of the professional SP line. Tamron has tested flagship technologies DualMPU (two processors), new generation VC (up to 5.5 stops in G2 lenses), fluorine coating of the front lens, Tamron Tap-in Console support and many others on its best new generation lenses (Tamron SP 70-200 F/ 2.8 Di VC USD G2, Tamron SP 24-70 F/2.8 Di VC USD G2, Tamron 100-400 F/4.5-6.3 Di VC USD and others). Now the Japanese are ready to implement all this into new lenses of the F/4 Di class, that is, into full-frame (compatible with crop cameras) “middle-class” lenses. According to Tamron, these are optically and technically excellent zoom lenses, but at the same time ultra-compact, not too expensive and traditionally with serious macro capabilities (photos on a large scale at a short distance).

Tamron 70-210 F/4 Di VC USD

Opens the Tamron 70-210 F/4 Di VC USD . Sorry for the lyrical digression, but the announcement of this lens reminded me of the beginning of the author’s photographic career, when the newly purchased famous “BeerCan” Minolta AF 70-210 F/4 gave a strong impetus to the desire to take photographs and develop. Now we get a lens with the same focal length range and aperture ratio, but many times more functional and, if you like, “sophisticated”. However, will it have the soul, color and bokeh of its classic counterpart? Let's see! Today we are waiting for a lot of shots taken with the new product!

Tamron 70-210 F/4 Di VC USD

So, Tamron 70-210 F/4 Di VC USD is a full-frame lens with an ultrasonic autofocus drive, high-quality dust and moisture protection, a stabilizer and a 5-year warranty. Great start! Further more. DualMPU technology and ultrasonic autofocus drive guarantee fast and accurate autofocus on cameras of any class, even the cheapest, as well as an advanced stabilization system that compensates for natural hand shake, camera micro-movements due to mirror beating and shutter shaking, and helps to frame more accurately, especially when shooting fast moving objects. The manufacturer guarantees up to 4 stops of compensation. All this can be fine-tuned to suit your shooting style using the Tamron Tap-in Console at home or in the field on a regular computer.

Tamron 70-210 F/4 Di VC USD

While the autofocus system is operating, the dimensions of the lens do not change (internal focusing) and the front element is not forgiven. This allows you to use spectacular, gradient and circular polarizing filters with comfort and ease. The Minolta AF 70-210 F/4, of course, could not boast of such capabilities.

As the industry's leading optical designer, Tamron delivers sharp, aberration-free images and class-leading x0.32 magnification! With a minimum focusing distance of 95 cm, perfectly defined bokeh is achieved, emphasized by the proprietary 9-blade diaphragm (electromagnetic, by the way). The same can be said about sharpness - 3 low-dispersion elements in the design will not give aberrations a chance. Unlike the Minolta AF 70-210 F/4, there is no pronounced vignetting at F/4.

1/125 F/4 ISO 100 210mm

But the main thing that Tamron is proud of is the dimensions of its lenses. Tamron 70-210 F/4 Di VC USD has dimensions from 174 mm (Nikon version) to 176.5 mm (Canon version). With a weight of 850 and 860 grams, respectively. The maximum diameter is 76 mm, and the thread diameter for installing filters is 67 mm. Here the mentioned “Beer Can” is slightly superior to the Tamron 70-210 F/4 Di VC USD , but it is worth considering that it has neither internal focusing, nor an ultrasonic ring autofocus drive, nor a pronounced macro, nor a 4-stop stabilizer, nor dust and moisture protection. Of course, you cannot compare the perfection and complexity of the optical design of these lenses - the Tamron 70-210 F/4 Di VC USD has 20 elements in 14 groups, while the “classic” has only 12 elements in 9 groups.

Tamron 70-210 F/4 Di VC USD

When it comes to Tamron lenses, one cannot help but recall that this is the only manufacturer on the Russian market that provides a 5-year warranty on its lenses with free courier service anywhere in Russia!

Tamron 70-210 F/4 Di VC USD

A specialized accessory will be available for the Tamron 70-210 F/4 Di VC USD Foot for mounting the lens on a tripod with a built-in tripod platform of the ArcaSwiss system (suitable for most standard heads) - Tamron A034TM. Because it makes the lens heavier and increases its dimensions. Because the lens has the best stabilizer in its class. Since the price should not have been high, it was decided to sell it separately to those who really needed it. The lens is also fully compatible with proprietary Tamron 1.4x and Tamron 2x teleconverters.

The Tamron 70-210 F/4 Di VC USD on sale in April 2018. The price will be about 45-50 thousand rubles and will be officially announced by the time sales start.

Little big guy. Tamron 70-210mm F4 Di VC USD

Tamron's new 70-210mm F4 Di VC USD looks like a very promising lens, offering a more compact and affordable alternative to the existing 70-200mm F2.8 optic. The lens was revealed to the general public in February at the CP+ 2018 exhibition in Yokohama, Japan.

For starters, the 70-210mm F4 VC is truly impressively compact, weighing just 859 grams. It is perfectly balanced to work with cameras such as the Nikon D750. This is one of the smallest full frame DSLRs currently on the market. The optics won't weigh too much even if you don't use the extra battery pack.

Like the previous Tamron 70-200mm F2.8, the new F4 version features a dual-ring design. On this version, the zoom ring seems too narrow, however, this is a matter of taste.

Autofocus speed may not be as fast as Nikon's 70-200mm F4, but it should be fast enough to capture moving subjects.

The 70-210mm F4 comes with Tamron's vibration compensation system, offering a claimed four stops of CIPA-rated stabilization. If you work on a tripod or are confident in your hands, the stabilization system can be turned off using a switch on the body. A focus mode switch completes the set of controls on the optics.

Tamron 70-210 F4 has a 67mm filter thread size. The front element is specially coated to resist drips and oil stains, including fingerprints.

The 70-210mm design has 20 elements in 14 groups. Three of these elements are low dispersion, which helps combat axial and lateral chromatic aberration.

The Tamron 70-210mm F4 is weather-resistant, as evidenced by the gasket on the back of the lens and a number of additional gaskets at other joints. Obviously, this doesn't mean the optics can be submerged under water, but they will be able to handle rain with ease.

The petal hood adds length to this small lens. Tamron also offers a tripod mount for the 70-210mm F4, but you will have to purchase it separately.

If 210mm is not enough for you, you can use Tamron 1.4x and 2.0x teleconverters, as well as perform focus calibration in the TAP-In console.

Tamron 70-210mm Di VC USD will be available for Nikon and Canon cameras in April 2018 for $800.

New telephoto lens with f /4 aperture and excellent optical performance in a lightweight and compact body for maximum portability

February 22, 2018, Saitama, Japan - Tamron Co., Ltd. (President and CEO: Shiro Ajisaka), a leading manufacturer of optical products for a variety of applications, announces the launch of the new 70-210mm F/4 Di VC USD (Model A034), a compact telezoom for full-frame DSLR cameras. The A034 offers superior optical performance across the entire focal length range and a maximum magnification ratio of 1:3.1, the highest in its class*. The design includes an internal zoom mechanism to ensure stable and reliable operation. The A034 features a Dual MPU for high-speed, high-precision AF performance, as well as effective VC (Vibration Compensation) image stabilization for flexible and versatile use in a variety of situations. The new telephoto lens is water-resistant and features a protective fluorine coating on the front lens for comfortable outdoor shooting.

Product Features

  1. High quality telephoto lens with constant maximum aperture of F /4

Capitalizing on Tamron's decades of experience in improving telephoto lenses, the A034 features superior optical performance, high resolution and excellent contrast. The optical design (20 elements in 14 groups) uses three LD (Low Dispersion) lens elements to correct axial and lateral chromatic aberrations for clear, crystal-clear images across the entire frame. In addition, the A034 has a constant maximum aperture of F/4 across the entire focal length range, providing excellent control over depth of field and bokeh quality. Compared to faster telephoto lenses, the new A034 is lighter and more compact, weighing just 850g and an overall length of 174mm for easy portability. Lighter weight and smaller size make the new lens extremely comfortable for shooting in any conditions.

  1. Highest magnification ratio for this class of lenses and record short minimum focusing distance MOD

The A034 boasts a class-leading maximum magnification ratio of 1:3.1 and a class-leading* minimum focusing distance MOD of 0.95m. The shorter working distance allows photographers to get close-up shots of small objects such as flowers.

* Among interchangeable lenses in the 70-200mm F/4 class for full-frame DSLR cameras (as of January 2018; Tamron)

  1. Very reliable internal zoom mechanism

Thanks to the internal zoom mechanism, the physical length of the A034 does not change as the focal length changes, thereby minimizing shifts in the lens's center of gravity and providing more stable lens performance. Additionally, the photographer does not have to step back even when shooting space is limited, such as when photographing through a wire fence at a zoo. The so-called “trunk moving out” under its own weight is impossible, because the total length never increases. The design feels very secure and durable, and the non-rotating front element makes the use of polarizing filters much easier.

  1. High-speed Dual MPU * ensures accurate autofocus performance and excellent VC

The Dual MPU system includes two high-performance MPU microprocessors designed to control the AF autofocus and VC image stabilization systems. Both MPUs have a DSP (Digital Signal Processing) unit, which provides high-speed digital signal processing, improving the processing power of the entire system. The new control system guarantees high-speed and accurate AF performance, as well as increased efficiency of the VC stabilization system.

* New control system using two high-performance MPUs (microprocessor units).

Excellent autofocus performance

The A034 uses a USD (Ultrasonic Silent Drive) ring-type motor to achieve fast and accurate autofocus. Additionally, the new telezoom features a simultaneous manual focus override mechanism that allows photographers shooting in AF to instantly make precise manual focus adjustments without switching between AF and MF modes.

Outstanding image stabilization performance

The new A034 features Tamron's patented VC system and provides CIPA* 4-stop level of image stabilization. Even in low light or fairly slow shutter speeds, photographers will be able to enjoy handheld shooting without worrying about micro-shake.

* To check compliance with the CIPA standard: for Canon - EOS-5D MKIII camera was used; for Nikon - D810 camera was used.

  1. Fluoride coating

The surface of the front lens is coated with a protective fluorine compound that has excellent water and oil repellent properties. The front lens is now easier to clean and less vulnerable to the ravages of dirt, dust, moisture or oily fingerprints, making maintenance much easier. The coating also provides an increased level of durability and will maintain its effectiveness for many years.

  1. Moisture resistant design

Rubber seals are located in the bayonet area and other important locations to prevent the penetration of moisture and/or raindrops, creating a moisture-resistant design. This feature provides an extra layer of protection when shooting outdoors in adverse weather conditions.

  1. Tamron teleconverters

The new lens is compatible with 1.4x (model TC-X14) and 2.0x (model TC-X20) teleconverters, which increase the focal length of the lens by 1.4x and 2x, respectively. Both teleconverters are designed and constructed to provide high image quality.

Note: More information about teleconverters can be found on the Tamron website.

Optional tripod mount compatible with Arca-Swiss quick release plates

An optional Arca-Swiss mount is available for the A034 lens. Arca-Swiss mounts allow you to easily detach and attach the bracket to the tripod mounting pad as you shoot. To keep the weight of the lens and bracket to a minimum, we made the bracket from lightweight but durable magnesium alloy.

Mounting the lens to a tripod provides a stable support when shooting, as opposed to mounting a camera to a tripod, which prevents images from blurring. When attaching a lens to a tripod, the photographer retains the ability to rotate the camera and lens around its axis, which makes it easier to select a composition. Expand your shooting options with a tripod that lets you capture what you want, however you want, even at slow shutter speeds.

The electromagnetic diaphragm system is now used in lenses for Nikon cameras

The electromagnetic diaphragm system, which was a standard feature on Canon DSLR lenses, is now included in Nikon mount lenses ( available only on cameras compatible with the electromagnetic diaphragm) . More precise adjustment of the aperture opening is now possible because the aperture blades are actuated and controlled by the motor via electronic pulse signals.
