3) You will be able to master manual shooting modes. And let those who don’t care about the quality of their photos shoot automatically.
4) Master various photography techniques and tricks. This will allow you to get high-quality photographs.

7) You will become savvy in photo optics, and you will not have questions like this. "Which lens to buy for wedding photography". or . “What focal lengths will be in demand on my vacation trip” and the like.
8) Gain the essential skills of testing lenses before purchasing. It is very important to be able to check the optics before saying the word “I’ll take”, which is cherished for the seller. Undoubtedly, according to the law, you can then exchange a low-quality copy, but what happens if you notice this while at a paid photo session somewhere in the mountains? In addition, there are also some unpleasant things that are not considered a defect, but fortunately you will be notified about them and will be able to cut off such a lens before purchasing.
9) You can’t put a DSLR camera and optics in your pocket, so you need to be able to choose a reliable case for it, preferably with rain protection and other simple accessories that help fight condensation, etc. Such questions will no longer concern you. Also be savvy in choosing tripods and other necessary accessories.

11) You will be able to competently use the built-in and external flash to obtain correctly exposed and beautiful pictures.

35 AWARDS 2018, “Winter Landscape”:
Alexander Ippolitov about his photograph
Alexander Ippolitov is a photographer from Irkutsk. His photograph became one of the best in the “Winter Landscape” category of the 35AWARDS 2018 competition. Alexander became interested in photography as a child, when he inherited his first film camera, “Smena”. Over time, he decided to turn his hobby into a job and took up photography in earnest, fulfilling commercial orders and teaching photography to beginners along the way.
— Tell us about the photograph that became one of the best in the “ Winter Landscape ” . How was it made?
— The picture was taken in January 2019 on Lake Baikal. The lake, as a rule, storms when frost sets in, and all its rocky shores are covered with ice spray. They are especially beautiful at sunset or sunrise, because they are painted in some unreal shades from dark blue to turquoise. Early in the morning, before sunrise, I went out in search of interesting locations, but the weather was very aggressive, a strong wind was blowing. I accidentally found a small grotto in which I hid from the wind to wait for sunrise. When the sun appeared, it became clear that this grotto was the ideal scene for filming.

Dawn from an ice grotto on Lake Baikal
— Alexander, tell us about your travels: what country did you start from and how it become a way of life?
— Since I live in Siberia, the easiest way for us to get to Southeast Asia, and in particular Thailand. It was from traveling around Asia that the craving for travel began. Having traveled all over Asia, I set about Europe, and this is a real paradise for a photographer, because overcoming short distances, you find the most beautiful architecture and excellent natural landscapes. Unfortunately, to get this in Russia, you will have to travel much more. Now I’ve turned to the USA, where the nature is simply stunning: in an hour and a half by car, the landscape changes so that you can see the desert, snow-capped mountains, and evergreen forests.

Before the storm, Koh Samui, Thailand
— Where are you willing to return again and again to photograph?
— Oddly enough, in winter on frozen Baikal: it is always different, and there is always a new location where you can get amazing pictures.
Night on Lake Khubsugol, Mongolia
— What processing techniques and methods do you use?
— As a rule, I don’t do complex retouching and processing, unless, of course, it’s a portrait photograph, mainly color tonal correction in one of the RAW converters. But there are difficult shooting conditions or scenes where it is not clear at first glance what I would like to get, so I take several shots with different settings, and then combine them using masks in Adobe Photoshop.
Sunset on Phuket island, Thailand
— What technical equipment do you use?
— For the last eight years I have been using a Canon 5D Mark II SLR camera; This is a long-outdated model, but I didn’t see any point in changing it, since it produces excellent shots. It was only at the end of last year that I decided to switch to a Canon EOS R mirrorless camera, because the Canon 5D Mark II’s performance at high ISOs no longer satisfied me. My most used lenses at the moment are Canon EF and Samyang 14 mm f/2.8.
— Which country would you recommend everyone to visit?
— If we talk about landscape photography, then the USA: there are hundreds of thousands of photogenic places and locations for every taste.

Ekaterina: Do you have any idols in the world of photography?
Egor: It seems to me that at this age there cannot be such idols. There are people from whom you learn, emphasizing life positions, shooting style, features of work. Sometimes it captivates you and you want to know more about this person and his work. In addition, it is always useful to be in close interaction with people who have achieved greater success than you. They are incredibly fun to talk to and there is a lot to learn. But I don’t put anyone directly as an idol. But there are mentors.
In winter I went to a master class with the famous wedding photographer Rustam Khadzhibaev. There are a million wedding photographers, but he is the only one who takes photographs like this. Interests the newlyweds, brings out emotions, feelings, works on their comfort. That is, they don’t just stand with serious facial expressions, look into the camera, but they live, and you can feel it! It’s really worth a lot to learn from such a master.
At one time I was looking for how to combine photography and pedagogy. I was offered to photograph children. “You’re a photographer, take a photo!” I didn’t yet know how to do it, I clung to the opportunities provided to earn money. Overall it turned out well for that time, for the first time. But I wondered how I could do it differently. Children should not sit so sad, they should enjoy this process. I started searching, digging into the topic and quite by chance came across children’s photographer Igor Gubarev, first I watched his video, then I climbed the site, read everything I could, looked at the photographs, and then I matured and went to his master class with an understanding of the matter, with the understanding that this investment is quite justified. I got acquainted with the methodology, with his approach to work. He turned out to be very close to me, and after graduating from college, when I started doing this, I very actively began to apply his methods, the techniques that he had found in his time.
But I wasn't trying to be Igor Gubarev. I tried to become Yegor Ippolitov. I already have my own methods, my own developments, but the basis, the beginning, came from Igor.
Ekaterina: For me, as an artist, the mobility of the model is a problem. But for a photographer, as I understand it, this is a plus, on the contrary?
Egor: Some people like to make models freeze statically in the frame. On the contrary, I don’t like static and staging. So that the child is in a certain position, looking at us with serious eyes, holding an apple or a Christmas tree garland...
Ekaterina: Or with a monkey! When I was a child, I had a lot of these photos with animals...
Egor: ( Laughs ). I'm not against staged children's photography. But lately it has become too much.
People are not professional models. A photographer cannot always make a person look good in the frame and at the same time feel comfortable. You can put a person in a “smart” pose, but it will be written on his face that he is worried, he is uncomfortable.
Instead of choosing a pose, it’s easier for me to make a person move and move. With older models, I start by asking them to jump in place and spin from side to side. As for me, the model should move, should live in the frame. When this life is visible, the photograph turns out interesting, filled with meaning. And already in this mood, without physical and emotional pressures, you can give some advice about posing. All you have to do is manage this process and take good photos.
With a love story, you can set a general theme: “Imagine such a story...” And the two of them begin to improvise in the frame. There will still be some elements of the production, but it is much better when they come up with them themselves and stand up in a way that is convenient for them. Obviously better than dry ones - “Bend over, freeze, stand like that...”.
Interview with photographer Egor Ippolitov
Ekaterina: Have you ever tried to engage in other forms of art besides photography?
Egor: No. I am afraid that this will simply cause homeric laughter from my colleagues; it will not lead to anything positive. And art... In general, all life is pure art! Communication with people, empathy is also an art! Not everyone owns it. This is the art I try to comprehend, although it doesn’t always work out.
Interview with photographer Egor Ippolitov, quote

Egor: Psychology and pedagogy come in handy every day! There's nowhere without her. If I had not studied to be a teacher at one time, I would not have become who I am now. Oh, if I had known when I was studying at a pedagogical college that I would be a children's photographer... ( Laughs ). I would definitely study better.
But on the other hand, my passivity in studying is compensated by work experience, and this knowledge is no longer superficial, as during my studies, but very specific.
Ekaterina: So, when you were studying to become a teacher, you didn’t think about being a photographer? Did you want to be a teacher?
Egor: Unfortunately, it happens in our lives that when we finish school, we still don’t know who we will be. We start thinking about this later, when we study at the institute. And then leaving somewhere, changing universities is already inconvenient: you study for two years, you understand - it’s not yours, but you have to finish your studies, it’s a pity for the time wasted. Therefore, we have many specialists with diplomas, but not working in their specialty. People with incredible potential working as sales managers and consultants.

5 Best Educational Programs in Photography
Anastasia Zheleznova
The advent of cheap SLR equipment and point-and-shoot cameras with interchangeable lenses called into question the value of learning to be a photographer. However, the problem remains relevant for those who want to approach the profession wisely: master the techniques of studio photography and retouching, see how covers are shot for Esquire and Vogue, and also understand the process of development of modern photography. The T&P review includes the 5 best schools that teach all this.
Program: There are main and additional programs. The first, “Photography and Multimedia,” lasts 2.5 years and involves full-time study on weekdays. Admission is possible by passing an interview and providing a portfolio. An additional educational program (courses, master classes) on a commercial basis is available to all interested parties.
Teachers: The teaching staff are titans of photography and curatorial work, gallery owners, contemporary art theorists, and VGIK associate professors. Irina Meglinskaya, Vladimir Kupriyanov and David Riff, Kirill Preobrazhensky and Alexey Shulgin conduct their workshops at the school.
Portfolio acceptance: from June 1 to September 1.
Tuition cost: the main program is free (technical fee - 3,000 rubles per semester), course prices vary.
Contacts: 2nd Krasnoselsky lane, building 2, +7 (499) 763-20-23.
On T&P: course “Identification of 19th century photography”.
Program: Photoplay provides the opportunity to learn how to shoot on film, master reportage and genre photography, work as a photographer in the studio and post-processing of photographs. There are also online photography courses that involve interacting with the teacher and fellow students, completing assignments, and learning theory, of course. In total, the school has more than 40 programs. Photoplay also regularly hosts master classes from world-class photographers - Michael Ackerman was the last to come to the school with his exhibition, an atelier was held with Steve McCurry in the fall, and an exhibition of his work is planned for this spring.
Teachers: Leading Russian photographers, artists and art critics: Sergey Maximishin, Svetlana Pozharskaya, Elena Ivanova-Tagirova.
Cost of training: the course “Fundamentals of Photography” - 25,500 rubles, the program “Shooting for a glossy magazine”, for example, costs 11,900 rubles.
Contacts: Kalanchevsky deadlock, building ⅗, +7 (495) 580-82-82.
Program: Training begins according to the general program; by the end of the third month, students are asked to choose a specialization: art photography, fashion photography or advertising photography. The course includes core theoretical subjects: history of art and history of photography, as well as related disciplines: cinematography, painting, design, media art, practical classes and internships.
Teachers: Course curators Anna Shpakova and Svetlana Taylor have assembled a team of successful Russian photographers collaborating with glossy publications and galleries. Master classes and seminars are conducted by Vladimir Fridkes, Egor Zaika and Alexey Sorokin. Art historians and experts provide theoretical training to students. Workshops and lectures are regularly held with invited Russian and foreign photographers. In February, students of the course listened to Georgy Pinkhasov, the only Russian photographer who works for the legendary Magnum agency, created by Cartier-Bresson. Participants in the winter intensive were lucky to meet Vladimir Mishukov and Boris Bendikov.
Recruitment: until September 30, 2011.
Tuition fee: semester - 95,000 rubles.
Contacts: Nizhnyaya Syromyatnicheskaya, 10/3, +7 (495) 640-30-15.
Program: The basic course “Photographer” is designed for 8 months, combines creative and technical disciplines, intended for beginners. You can also choose courses to systematize your existing knowledge and study a direction of interest in photography - advertising, art or analog photography.
As for the relevance of education at VGIK, I can only say one thing: classical theoretical education cannot in any way prevent you from doing something modern - but at VGIK they don’t teach anything relevant at all and, most importantly, they don’t teach post-processing of pictures.”
Enrollment: for the main course - in March 2011.
Tuition fee: 75,000 rubles.
Contacts: Wilhelma Pika, 3 and Budaiskaya, 3, +7 (499) 181-37-41, +7 (916) 375-99-10.
Program: The course “Fundamentals of Photography” provides three modules: the general user, oriented classes - genre, landscape, advertising photography and the level at which practice or internship as a photographer’s assistant is possible.
Teachers: select according to the criterion of “a good practitioner who can explain the theory.” Most are advertising industry professionals.
Tuition fee: 10,000 rubles for a course of 9 lessons.
Contacts: Bolotnaya embankment, 3/1, +7 (495) 798-32-33, +7 (963) 726-55-50.
